The Versailles Palace
One of the most iconic landmarks of French history and culture is the Versailles Palace. Situated in the city of Versailles, near Paris, France, this royal palace was constructed during the 17th century. Originally a hunting lodge, it underwent expansion by King Louis XIV, transforming into a grandiose symbol of his power.
The French monarchy resided in this palace from 1682 to 1789, marking it as their official residence during that period. In 1979, UNESCO classified the Versailles Palace as a World Heritage Site, acknowledging its historical and cultural significance.
With over 700 rooms, the palace boasts notable features such as the famous Hall of Mirrors. Designed by architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart, this long, rectangular room showcases 17 mirror-clad arches that reflect the light from 17 windows facing the gardens. Additionally, the ceiling is adorned with a series of frescoes, adding to the grandeur of this architectural masterpiece.
The Hall of Mirrors hosted significant events and ceremonies, including royal weddings, diplomatic receptions, and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles at the end of World War I.
Amidst the French Revolution, the palace underwent ransacking, resulting in the destruction or theft of numerous priceless works of art. Restoration efforts commenced during the reign of King Louis-Philippe in the 19th century, leading to its transformation into a museum accessible to the public.
Guests can marvel at the baroque architecture, the exquisite interior, and the remarkable collections of art and furnishings in Versailles Palace.
The Gardens
André Le Nôtre designed the Versailles Gardens, spanning an impressive 800 hectares. Comprising a series of terraces and tree-lined paths, the gardens offer breathtaking views.
Additionally, the gardens host several fountains and over 200 statues, contributing an extra layer of elegance to the already impressive landscape. Renowned sculptors of the time, such as François Girardon, Antoine Coysevox, and Guillaume Coustou, created many of these statues.
Notable statues include the Apollo Fountain and the Basin of Neptune, showcasing the god of the frogs provoked by Jupiter’s wrath.
The gardens feature intricate water features, widely regarded as some of the most beautiful in the world.
The Estate of Trianon
The Estate of Trianon, a part of the Palace of Versailles, was constructed in 1762 in the French Rococo style by King Louis XV.
Designed as a private retreat for the royals, the Palace of Trianon and its accompanying gardens offered a serene escape from the formal and rigid ambiance of the Palace of Versailles.
The estate comprised various buildings, including the Grand Trianon, the smaller Petit Trianon mansion, as well as several pavilions, gardens, and lakes.
Around 1783, Queen Marie Antoinette made the Trianon her residence, where she preferred spending much of her time away from the formal court environment.
The access to the Gardens and The Estate of Trianon are included in your ticket.
